Radfactor Chromite Russian Juggling Ball (75 mm)

The Radfactor Chromite Russian ball is a thin-shelled Russian ball with dense chromite filling. A chromite ball has an enhanced Russian effect compared to the Premium Radfactor Russian ball because the chromite filling is more dense than any other Russian ball filling (such as sand, bird feed, millet, and micro-glass beads). The lighter the weight of the shell in comparison to the weight of the filling, the more intense the effect. In general this type of ball is mostly used for numbers juggling, but has become much more popular for all types of toss juggling. The high density chromite filling lowers the center of gravity of the ball, and the filling falls to the bottom of the ball faster on the catch compared to sand filling. However, this also increases the wobble of the ball if it is thrown from your hand with any spin or unevenness. The noticeable Russian effect makes juggling 7 balls easier with this Chromite Russian ball.

This style ball is called a Russian ball because Russian jugglers were the first to use this type of partially filled juggling ball in modern times (since around 1990). However, the concept of a partially filled ball can be traced back to the 19th century. One disadvantage of this type of light weight Russian ball is that it is easily affected by wind, making it difficult to juggle with outdoors. The ball shell is soft, but not too soft or thin to be affected by altitude or heat changes (some very light shelled Russian balls will become dented if you fly with them.) The texture of the ball is very smooth, not sticky but also not slippery, perfect for multi-ball releases from one hand. The ball is made with a plug flush to its surface, giving the entire ball an even texture and feel with no exposed/raised plug. Balls come in precise matched weights.

The balls come in 4 different sizes: 65 mm, 70 mm, 72 mm, 75 mm:

  • 65 mm (2.55 inch), 85 grams: This is a good sized ball for numbers juggling more than 5 balls, or for small jugglers.
  • 70 mm (2.75 inch), 95 grams: This ball is good for 3 to 5 ball juggling and it has nice light weight great for practicing often.
  • 72 mm (2.83 inch), 95 grams: This is an odd and uncommon sized ball that was made popular in Japan, where jugglers are very specific about sizing and tend to have relatively smaller hands. While it does not seem like this size would feel different than 70 mm, jugglers can really feel the sizing difference when holding 3 in one hand. Some jugglers feel that the 70 mm ball is too small and the 75 mm too large for their hands, and much prefer this in-between size of 72 mm.
  • 75 mm (2.95 inch), 100 grams: Comparable to the size of a baseball, this ball is good for 3 to 5 ball juggling for people up to 6 feet tall with fairly large hands. It is also a good choice for jugglers who want to juggle 3 to 4 balls and like the look of bigger juggling balls.

I love these Russian balls. The chromite seems to reduce wobble and the extra heaviness is great for foot catches, I will buy more in the future.
