Renegade Kevlar Flat Wick

Renegade was the first prop maker to use Kevlar as a torch wick (1984) to replace asbestos. Renegade was also the first prop maker to make folded wick heads (1986). Since then and with the advent of fire dance and flow arts, Kevlar wicking has become the industry standard. Renegade has a full selection of flat wick sizes and thicknesses, which can be used to make folded, woven or rolled wicks heads.

Renegade has two grades of Kevlar. Our standard wick is made of a Kevlar thread with a fiberglass strand at is core, which produces a softer absorbent wick. We also sell pure 100% Kevlar flat wicks, which are much denser and more durable; they last long in certain applications but cost more.

  • Kevlar flat wick, 1/16-inch-thick: a thin, flat wick best for small props that are not exposed to many drops, it is made with a simple cross weave.
  • Kevlar flat wick, 1/8-inch-thick: this is the standard thickness used for most props and is made with a herringbone weave, which is the most durable weave.
  • Kevlar flat wick 100% pure: more expensive than a standard wick, it has higher durability and is a good choice if you are making a prop that is subjected to many hard drops.

Pro tips (intermediate to advanced fire dancers)

Kevlar wicking from all brands is fairly similar, although one key factor is the weave of the wicking. If the wicking has a herringbone weave, the pattern is interlocked; if one strand breaks, it will not cause the wick to unravel. This weave can only be done on wicks that are at least 1/8 inch thick. Thinner 1/16 wicks are made with a simple cross weave, so if several strands break by wearing or burning through, the wick head can unravel.
