Renegade 100% Kevlar Flat Wick

Renegade was the first prop maker to use Kevlar as a torch wick (1984) to replace asbestos. Renegade was also the first prop maker to make folded wick heads (1986). Since then and with the advent of fire dance and flow arts, Kevlar wicking has become the industry standard. Renegade has a full selection of flat wick sizes and thicknesses, which can be used to make folded, woven or rolled wicks heads.

Renegade has two weaves of 100% Kevlar. The twill weave which comes in two thickness, 1/16 and 1/8. Depending on the application and how the wick is rolled, folded or woven a thicker or thinner wick may work better. We also sell pure 100% Kevlar flat cross wicking, which are much denser and more durable, they last long in certain applications where you have lots of abration from dropping. The twill woven wicks are softer than the cross weave and are better suited for weavng wick heads. The cross weave is firmer and better suited for rolled wicks.

  • 100% Kevlar flat wick, 1/16-inch-thick: a thin, flat wick best for small props that are not exposed to many drops, it is made with a twill weave.
  • 100%Kevlar flat wick, 1/8-inch-thick: this is the standard thickness used for most props and is made in both twill and cross weave, Cross weave is more durable, twill is lighter and more absorbent.
  • The twill weave comes in two thickness, 1/16 and 1/8. Depending on the application and how the
wick is rolled, folded or woven a thicker or thinner wick may work better. By volume thicker wick is cheaper than thinner so if you are not sure of which
will work better, the 1/8 thickness is more cost effective.

Pro tips (intermediate to advanced fire dancers)

Kevlar wicking from all brands is fairly similar, although one key factor is the weave of the wicking. If the wicking has a twill weave, the pattern is interlocked; if one strand breaks, it will not cause the wick to unravel. The 1/8 inch thickness is more cost effective than the 1/16 so if you can use the thicker wickig  it will save you some money.
